Here is a link to the post Port Authority; where the main concerns among the US lawmakers were: national security, unionized workers, and the way business is conducted in UAE. However, these objections were rejected by Karen P. Hughes, Undersecretary of Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs.Being born and brought up in Dubai, there are couple of things about it worth mentioning, which might give an indication of the operations of DP World in USA. First of, Dubai has a great leader behind its success, His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. His vision is to promote Dubai around the world and to achieve this lot of projects had been launched and were turned into a great success. Some of these are Dubai Shopping Festival, Dubai Summer Surprises, Godolphin, Information Technology Educational Project, e-Dubai, The Palms, The World, and many more. The acquisition of P&O is only a step forward towards his continued vision, with a similar promise of success. Here is a quote from Sheikh Mohammad from his profile printed in Gulf News:
I have a vision. I look to the future, 20, 30 years. I learnt that from my father, Shaikh Rashid. He is the true father of modern Dubai. I follow his example. He would rise early and go alone to watch what was happening on each of his projects. I do the same. I watch. I read faces. I take decisions and I move fast. Full throttle.
That is the attitude of business in Dubai. Setting a vision and fulfilling it till the end, with no room for slack. And I am sure that this will be the attitude of DP World when it starts its operations in USA.
The only issue i see from the acquisition of P&O by DP World is that related to unions. Dubai doesn't have unions which makes it easier to bring cheap man-power from different parts of the world because of its close proxy to Asian countries. However, things will be different in USA and from my expereince in Dubai, I know that DP World will be following the US laws and regulations. This would be its first experience dealing with labor union, but I am confident that it would be quick on learning curves by studying the way unions are delt with in US and making use of the experiences of expatriates (from US, and different part of Europe) in Dubai Ports operational in Dubai.
For more details on Dubai's Culture, lookout for my next post in which I will write exactly that. for now this is the post of the person, KT, who started liking Dubai after watching a documentary on in on Discovery channel. And if you want to read more about Sheikh Mohammad this is the link to his website.
